1996年美国影坛明星梅尔吉布森给了世界一个巨大震惊，他自编自导的古装片《勇敢的心》（《Brave heart》1995）共获得了10项奥斯卡奖提名，并最终赢得五项奥斯卡大奖（最佳影片、最佳导演、最佳摄影、最佳音响、最佳化妆），这一年成为梅尔吉布森的黄金之年。
梅尔吉布森生于1956年1月3日，在纽约长大的梅尔从小就对电影产生了巨大浓厚的兴趣。1968年他随家庭迁至澳大利亚居住，并且在悉尼学习专业表演技术。随后进入影坛，令他一举成名的是著名导演乔治米勒的科幻片《疯狂至极》(《Mad Max》1979)，他还主演了米勒导演的另一部影片《Tim》(1979)，《公路战士》(《The Road Warrior》1981)以及《疯狂至极》的续集。此外他还受到另一位澳大利亚新浪潮导演彼得·维尔的青睐，主演了《Galiipoli》和《生存在危险中的一年》。在这些影片中，吉布森的演技不断得到提高，变得娴熟自如，灵活自然。

1984年梅尔吉布森来到好莱坞，拍了一些影片象《河》（《The River》1984）、《奖金》《，但都反应平平。这些影片并不适合他，直到1987年理查德唐纳找到了梅尔，让他主演了《致命武器》（《Lethal Weapon》），饰演影片中幽默诙谐、勇敢坚强、坚持正义，与邪恶势力顽强斗争的警探里格斯。这一角色是成熟的梅尔的出色奉献，从此他做为一个完美的动作明星向好莱坞的巨星地位迈进。《致命武器》取得了巨大成功，它的第二第三集也随即推出。梅尔吉布森也因此取得了巨大声誉，他创办了他自己的制片公司LCON Rrcductions。在拍摄三部《致命武器》的同时，他还参加拍摄了不少的影片。如《德奎拉日出》（《Tequila Sunrise》)。这其中属于他的制片公司出品的就有《哈姆雷特》（《Hamlet》1990）和《永远年轻》（《Forever Young》1992）。

在主演了大量影片并作过制片人之后，梅尔吉布森开始准备做一个导演“演而优则导”在影视界很常见，克林特伊斯特伍德，凯文科斯特纳，朱迪福斯特都在这方面取得了巨大成功。梅尔对此已是早有准备，作为演员他有丰富的表演经验，作为制片人他也熟悉后台幕后工作，而且与三个著名导演的紧密合作，互相切磋也使他对导演的工作相当熟悉了解，他再从事导演工作可以说是轻车熟路，事半功倍。1993年他执导了影片《无脸人》（《The Man Without Face》），讲述了一个古代传奇故事，并且亲自主演；1994年他又还主演了影片《赌侠马华利》（《MAVERICK》）饰演了一个西部枪手，赌徒的形象。在积累了大量经验后，梅尔投入全部精力制作、导演并主演《勇敢的心》。这是一部充满了激情、政治、浪漫、道德的古装史诗巨片，对任何一个导演来说都是一个空前的挑战和考验。梅尔表现出非凡的能力，成功地推出了这样一部具有深刻民族主义和政治内涵的影片，他当之无愧被称为世界巨星。去年他推出的史诗巨片《爱国者》再度勇夺排行榜冠军，但让他进入金球奖最佳男主角的却不是这部片子，而是之后他拍摄的喜剧片《男人百分百》（What Women Want），从影以来多半饰演英雄或阳刚角色的梅尔，不曾演过浪漫喜剧片，这部片子可以说是他尝试此类型的第一遭，在奥斯卡影后海伦亨特与喜剧片著名女导演南茜迈尔（Nancy Meyers）的衬托下，充分发挥其幽默，令人捧腹不已。
